European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
